Punctuation: the Hiatus

I have already covered all the cases where the use of comma in English differs from that in Portuguese. Well, there are some cases where everything is different, like the way you English speakers write dates. It's so different that there's no way to compare or mix up.

Because we're approaching the holidays, I'm going to discontinue the posts on punctuation until next year, when I plan to discuss semicolons, dashes, ellipses, and so on.

Thanks for all your comments! I've been learning a lot. I wish I could have concentrated the discussion in one journal, instead of splitting it among four journals, but alas, it's hard to please everyone. (Some people don't like being redirected to other journals.)

[ETA: No, I'm not leaving! I'm just discontinuing this specific thread for now.]

Title: Detention
Author: Naughty is as Naughty Does.
Giftee: [info]anya_elizabeth
Word Count: 2,954
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Severus/Harry
Warnings: *Some rather rough snogging and sexing, explicit sexual themes. AU only in the fact that Snape’s alive and still teaching at Hogwarts for Harry’s “8th year”. The trio all go back to get their N.E.W.T.s, but JKR only stated the opposite in interviews, so I don’t know if that counts towards the AU or official canon, depending on your perception of canon.*
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No copyright infringement is intended.
Summary: Harry knows he doesn’t have to be at Hogwarts. He knows he doesn’t have to go to lessons, and especially detentions. Severus knows this, too. But when Severus orders, Harry comes, and it doesn’t take long for both to figure out why.
Author's Notes: I’m sorry I couldn’t make it completely canon-compliant, but you said you were ok with an AU and I thought I’d write an “8th year” fic. I couldn’t give you a positive ending otherwise, and I wasn’t completely comfortable writing Snape/Harry in Harry’s sixth year or younger due to his age for some reason. I really hope you enjoy this anyway, dear reader! : ) I had a lot of fun writing it! ♥

A/N: Written for Space Wrapped, a Kirk/McCoy Christmas countdown comm. So, I've been awake a lot lately (no, I mean a LOT) and am all screwed up for time. I had one fic I started for this, and then I realized it was getting all involved and there was no way it was getting done today, so I though, okay, but I can always do porn, short and sweet, right? For the second day of Christmas, I wanted to give props to [info]eeyore9990. For starters, Eey just plain makes fandom fun. She recs, she writes (well, I might add), she betas, she cheerleads, she stands up for people who can't stand up for themselves. She is one of my favorite people in fandom. Plus, she's funny as heck and tells the best anecdotes. She's also super open-minded and always there for me when I need to try a new kink but sort of need someone to hold my hand, and her ability to brainstorm is second to none. Seriously, I have a fest fic coming up and it would have been just a regular old smutty fic, but Eey helped me come up with an ending that had me roaring with laughter! I'm so happy to know Eeyore9990.

And in other news, once again, ZICAM ROCKS! I feel 85% better than I did this morning. Not perfect, but dude, I even started a drabble for [info]alisanne. Hopefully other drabbles will follow. I love being productive!

Here's the reply I received from LJ:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your concerns. We understand that gender is not binary, and intend to respect that understanding for our users.

At this time, the code you reference is not live on the site, and will not become so in the future. We know that you, and many other users, have serious concerns about any requirement to specify gender, so we'd like to take a moment to explain events and our position further.

The intention of this code was to change the sign-up process to include a field for the selection of gender; that the code would completely disable the "Unspecified" option at the same time was deemed unacceptable. While the code in question had gone to our beta (testing) server, it had not gone to our production server, and will not do so due to this problem. Furthermore, we'd like to clarify that code posted to the changelog community is not always final, as such code must then go through the beta testing process and can often be changed before actual implementation.

Additionally, some erroneous information has been spread regarding the potential public display of the gender field. We would like to clarify that gender is not currently publicly displayed on the profile, nor anywhere else on the site, and there are no plans to change this behavior.

Regards,
LiveJournal Community Care Team

Argh. LJ's [info]changelog reveals that LJ is planning to make gender a mandatory field at account creation and remove the Unspecified option for the gender field. You can read more about the subject here. As I deeply dislike this plan, I changed my gender option to Unspecified here and left a polite comment here expressing my displeasure.

(and hoping she doesn't notice the plagiarism) (am kidding. Beth, I am plagiarizing you. Sry.)

No, I'm just a little too sleepystupid to be more coherent on my own, and she says all the things I mean to, so.

Anyway.

Take a look at this charming news from [personal profile] synecdochic about LJ's decision to make Gender a mandatory field and only allow the options 'Male' or 'Female.'

Even if I didn't have friends who identify as transgender or genderqueer, I'd still be disgusted by LJ's shortsighted and, quite frankly, hateful decision, because...what will our next mandatory binary choice be? “Black or White?” “Christian or Atheist?” How many ways can you imagine you being written out of the equation?

Read the relevant linked posts, consider changing your gender listing to unspecified' while you still can (if you haven't already done it), and consider – one more time – whether it might not be smarter to leave LJ once and for all.

---

Part not from Beth: so, in following links, it seems pretty clear the intent is probably targeting for ads, which, yeah, hi, I don't actually want pop-ups and flash ads in the first place? but oh my GOD do I ever not want ads that guess what I will like based upon my biological gender, because, and I swear this is not a slam against those of you who are fond of cosmetics and shoes, but I am not one of you, and I already tolerate 837456826345 pages of less-intrusive nonblinky ads for these and similar in magazines more aimed toward women. Not that I want to see more ads for trucks, either, but I'm more likely to buy a truck than a truckload of shoes. Anyway. This shit is not binary, sorry, and I know there is a whole industry of people who try to take demographics and break them down this way and I know that by and large, they see trends and averages and it works well enough for them, but it doesn't work well enough for me, and I can't imagine I'm so very unusual that my frequent irritation at assumptions made along these lines is totally off the end of the curve.

---

EDIT: There are now addenda to the original post in which the US GM asserts this was all a test thing and they really had no such intent. I think that's ass-covering, but as long as the outcome is Not Do That, okay. *Waits for next time they do a code push*

I've just made the following as a post in my LJ:
---
LiveJournal is removing the Unspecified option for the gender field. That's right: you get to be male or female. Period. That's it.

Details here: http://synecdochic.dreamwidth.org/366609.html

This journal has been, in my user profile, "Unspecified" gender for a long time, because gender is not binary. If/when I am unable to decline to state my gender, or if/when I am forced to declare my gender along a binary division, here on LJ, I will be deleting this journal.

I have Dreamwidth invite codes for anyone who wants them, just provide me with the email address you want the code sent to. There is also http://dw-codesharing.dreamwidth.org/ as well, which does not require you to provide your email address to anyone.

---

Dreamwidth, I adore you. <3

ETA: And now I've added the following to my LJ post:
---
ETA: The code has now been rolled back and will not be pushed with the next codepush.

After seeing some of the reaction to this entire situation from my LJ friendslist, however, I will be deleting this journal later today. elkes_obsession is already gone. I had been committed to trying to do everything I could to keep unbroken links, to retain memories categories, to not delete entries, even though so many things about LJ's ownership bother me. I'd tried to retain the human connections across the multiple sites. But apparently plenty of the folks I've felt I was making the effort for are sick and tired of this sort of thing. I'm getting a 'don't let the door hit your ass on the way out' vibe, and damn, that HURTS. And so now I'm just DONE.

---

So.

[livejournal.com profile] elkes_obsession is gone, as it was a navigational tool to organize my views into various LJ communities, and I'd left it up in case others were getting benefit from it.

And [livejournal.com profile] elke_tanzer. Created on 2002-04-13 12:36:18 (#527447), watching 515 friends, communities, and feeds. 19,435 comments received, 19,512 comments posted, 2,880 Journal Entries, 204 Tags, 16,918 Memories.

I've decided that for the next few weeks, I'm going to do appreciation posts. It's sort of like a twelve days of why fandom rocks so hard.

So! First up--[info]accioslash. For starters, her holiday card made me squawk with laughter, then immediately become envious I hadn't thought of it first. [info]accioslash's writing and drawing is usually like that. I have a tremendous admiration for her work, but at the same time I never fail to go, "Damn! Why wasn't I clever enough to have come up with that! Not fair!" A big part of that is because Accio has that fabulous sense of humor I admire so much; sly and twinkly with just enough of the ribald to be truly, truly awesome. She manages to be enormously entertaining no matter what the subject. Moreover, I had the wonderful experience of hanging with her in person at Terminus, and it was a highly entertaining visit. Her humor and talent add so much to our fandom!

RPGs, the other collaborative fiction
 ac1d6urn

07:30pm 14/12/2009

Acid
[personal profile] sinick, devious RPG-dwelling creature that she is, has introduced me to my current addiction: the RPG called Breaking Point, which has a few interesting twists.
  • It's 2024 in Harry Potter world.
  • Suddenly, wizards from the past are popping up all over the place as if they'd Apparated through time instead of space
  • Resurrected wizards include Tom Riddle, Death Eaters, and Grindelwald. Chaos, and mayhem ensues. Everyone panics1.
My previous experience with role-playing games included tossing dice and crunching numbers for stats in table tops, beating Sephiroth, leveling up a horde of Oblivion characters, and avoiding chat transcripts of the 'I put on my wand and my wizard hat' kind.

Now, I play Albus Severus Potter.

I am not the first player to take him on, and he's had some interesting biography facts handed down:
  • He's a Ravenclaw reporter-wannabe.
  • It was the book canon's fault that he is a thoughtful, quiet second son that is close to his Dad and looks just like him
  • It was my fault alone when in the process of tweaking his bio, I made Al into a list-loving dork, an equal proportion mix of Sherlock Holmes, Sheldon Cooper, and pre-Pon Farr Spocklet.

Imagine, if you will, a short Clark Kent, sans the Superman suit3 underneath. Without the slightest possibility of there ever being a Superman suit. What is there instead is curiosity and logic.

This RPG is fun!

Everything went rather well for Al in his neat information bubble reinforced with books and newspapers, until his brother was cursed and Al witnessed (and helped) Snape save him. After some careful analysis of the situation, he concluded that Snape was a logical and rational creature worthy of interest and interaction.

Of course I should mention that Snape only tolerated Al seasoning his cauldrons until he learned what Al does for a crust.

Well, maybe he said it with a bit more character and a bit less emo. Sinick plays him and she watches her exclamation marks, as well as the emo.

Then Al suddenly declared to his dad that Severus Snape was the best thing that happened to them since sliced bread and gave his father, the Ever Suffering Boy Who Lived, an intellectual finger and a few new gray hairs in the process.

It all went from there.

Soon into playing Al I realized a few things about collaborative writing RPGs:
  • Your character gains depth as they interact with others and they never stop changing as a person
  • In character driven writing, strong plots help, a lot
  • Ask the players involved before sending your character to walk around poking others' characters, most likely they'll laugh and let you
  • There's no beta-readers. Get the words out while the reaction's still fresh in your head and let the others do the same. There will be typos and missed commas.
It's good for
  • Practicing to write dialogue driven conversations
  • Discovering the importance of speech patterns (you discover early on that you hear how your character sounds and whether they're tired, happy, or angry when they say it)
  • Rapidly producing a large body of text that would drive any sane beta reader nuts with errors
It's bad for
  • Constant POV storytelling. It jumps like a ping-pong ball all over, unless one of the players consciously maintains distance.
  • Strict control over the characters, you never know who'll show up, and where they'll drag you next
  • Procrastination purposes. It'll eat up your spare time, and take a huge chunk out of sleep time too, beware.
So, here you go, RPGs for fiction writers, in a nutshell.

If you want to join us, there's still plenty of characters left to resurrect, play, and puppeteer, such as Luna, Pansy, Bellatrix, the Lestranges, or whoever else comes to mind up to and including each one of the giant squid's tentacles (he is giant, and multi-limbed, he deserves multiple accounts, I say.)

1. And has hot, meaningless sex2, if you're into that sort of thing
2. Except for Dumbledore, who is just happy that his (boy)friend's back
3. Note, if your mind jumped to Clark Kent in his birthday suit, I am not responsible, it's all your mind's fault. Stop now. Proceed with reading.

Then I can start buying gifts. *sigh*

And speaking of gifts - OMG, so much pretty art has come my way in the past week. There is seekrit art for the Snarry-a-Thon banner which I'm dying to show everyone now *swoons* as well as a few more Snarry pieces that should be appearing by their various creators soon. Until then, [info]perselus drew me another Merlin piece that I can share now. It is mild, but still NWS. If you like it - and how could you not? - and you want something of your own, [info]perselus is currently taking commissions for both original and fan art.

NWS Merlin art under the cut... )

Sometimes You Get Marshmallows
Heh, yesterday, in a locked post (locked because it was mostly about other kinds of content), I said something to the effect that we were now in the annual period of impatience, in which we wait for fic both by and for self to post at various fests.

This morning, fic for me is up at both Happy Trekmas [here] and Smutty Claus [here is the fic; the Smutty_Claus post at LJ is here].

Either I have a superpower (in which case, I probably should use it more directly for good rather than for making the world eject fic for me), or I am the beneficiary of entertaining serendipity.

:D

3. Use a comma when two independent clauses are joined by a coordinating conjunction: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.

• She says she loves him, yet she continues to treat him like crap.

So far, it’s just like in Portuguese.

You can omit the comma if the clauses are both short.

• He smokes and she drinks.

I’m not sure, but I don’t think this would be correct in Portuguese. When we have two different subjects, the comma is always necessary. However, what the English Grammar rule says is that you can omit the comma. It’s optional.

However, there is another exception:
If the subject does not appear in front of the second verb, do not use a comma.

• She used to study in Boston but now lives in São Paulo.

Well, this is impossible in Portuguese. And although I desperately feel the need for a comma before “but”, I’d respect this English Grammar rule, if I hadn’t found another rule that said:

Use commas to set off phrases that express contrast:

• The puppies were cute, but very messy.
• They agreed to release one hostage, but not the other.

I found these examples on the internet. The rule is not very clear to me, because “but” (and "yet") typically introduces phrases that express contrast. So... when is it okay to omit the comma?

And then I found dozens of examples of good authors, both American and British, who use a comma before a coordinating conjunction even when the subject does not appear in front of the second verb. I’m going to post just a few examples.

cut for length )

What’s happening here? Am I missing something? Are they using commas to indicate a significant pause (or a contrast?) even when the more specific rule says not to use it? Am I allowed to do the same thing? I hope so.

How can the weekend basically be over already?

Between yesterday with Karita and today with Mom, my house is almost ready for the family Christmas dinner next Saturday. All that's left is the bathroom. Yay! Well, not yay for the bathroom, but... you know.

My camera's battery crapped out this morning, so I can't share the newest socklets. I've managed to lose the camera's charging cable again, so I ordered a funky penguin-shaped battery charger. Hopefully that won't be so easily lost.

Scarves have been bundled up and are ready for the post office tomorrow.

My driveway's almost all melted now. Had temps in the low 40s today. Lots of snow melting, which means tons of mud and less effort to get up the driveway. :)

The new jeans I bought online on Black Friday arrived last week. I took a chance and ordered a pair in size 16. Today they passed the dryer test. YAY. Of course, this means that the pairs I bought in size 18 have to go back. I think I'm okay with that. ;)

Bought the food for the family Christmas dinner. Did that with mom. Was kinda fun grocery shopping with mom.

I've been on-call today. Thankfully haven't had to go in. At this point, there's just one checkpoint left open. When that sucker closes, the phone gets turned off and I go the heck to bed.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my last few posts. You are all so fabulous and I'm unbelievably fortunate to have you.

I had a very productive weekend, despite a small crimp in my plans last night. I got the entire house cleaned, some laundry done, the Christmas tree and decorations up, and ten dozen Pfeffernusse made. Also, a pot of 7 bean soup for lunches next week. Josh went over to a friend's to spend the night, and I was going to get some porn written, but just as I got back from dropping him off and opening a bottle of champagne, I got a call: Josh was barfing his guts out, poor boo. So I put the champagne back in the fridge, went and picked him up, then downloaded Merlin and watched it, instead.

I am really smitten with Merlin. I've been watching and reading, and I may just have to write in this fandom. Maybe. We'll see. I haven't got any ideas, yet, but I feel like the possibility is there, at least. Yay, Merlin!

I did get a little bit of something written this afternoon, though; it's a story I've been working on forever, just a little bit at a time, for a lovely someone on my flist. Here is an excerpt: it's a Prince of Tennis fic, D1, tentatively titled "Key Money".

Practice usually takes it out of him but today's takes the cake )

I never watch TV, but we watched our tapes of Charlie Brown Christmas and Rudolph, and when they went off, Extreme Makeover was starting. I left the TV on, and have been crying on and off the whole time it's been on. Wow.

I'm not the most knowledgeable person around, about a bunch of stuff, yeah. And I try not to talk about stuff I don't know about... if I haven't earned the right to talk I try to Just Shut Up. I'm privileged in some ways and not so privileged in other ways. I sometimes say stupid shit without realizing it's stupid shit and then I try to learn and apologize and never make the same mistake twice. And a lot of the time, for me, it's easier for me to see how something is stupid hurtful shit when it comes out of someone else's mouth or keyboard, because when it comes out of my mouth or my keyboard it didn't immediately sound stupid or hurtful to me.

Stuff I have learned lately (not just from the latest shitstorm going on, but lately in general)...

1. When someone says they prefer a specific gendered or nongendered pronoun, I JUST DO IT. I just need to respect that preference.

1.a. If I screw that up once for someone? Please, anyone, give me a gentle reminder. If I screw that up twice for someone? Please, anyone, KICK ME.

1.b. This is not just related to whether or not I respect the person being referred to, but is also related to whether or not I respect everyone's right to have a personal pronoun preference.

2. If I don't have a clue whether someone prefers a specific gendered or nongendered pronoun, chances are that using 'they' as a singular, or zie and zir, will not piss them off or hurt them.

2.a. (I'm not sure about this, but so far it's holding true...) If I use they, or zie and zir, in reference to someone, and they distinctly do not prefer that, they can easily correct me without too much trauma or drama for either one of us.

2.b. There are folks who prefer they over zie and zir (or sie and hir), and folks who prefer zie and zir (or sie and hir) over they.

2.c. There are folks who do not self-identify as trans* who prefer non-gendered pronouns. There are folks who do not self-identify as cis* who prefer non-gendered pronouns.

3. It is awkward as hell for me to ask if a friend or acquaintance prefers any specific pronoun. That doesn't mean I should ever assume that they prefer she or he or zie. I should NOT ASSUME, even if I know them offline, even if I would probably tend to assume one pronoun is more likely than another based on my own personal history and the name they've chosen to use in any given setting, or any physical characteristic they've presented to me or kept private from me, or any attitude they've said or typed about any topic under the sun.

3.a. Awkward is not necessarily the same as hurtful. And if I can get myself through an awkward situation to prevent myself from hurting someone? If I realize the awkward situation is an option, I'm darned well choosing that rather than knowingly hurting someone.

3.b. It's really easy to be hurtful unintentionally if I don't know what I'm talking about.

So.

All I can do right now? Is offer virtual chocolates, and try not to mess this post up, because I just can't be silent right now. I'm sorry that people suck, and I'm sorry that folks I care about are being hurt, and I'm sorry that I've been unintentionally hurtful in the past.

And I desperately hope that I'm not being unintentionally hurtful now, especially given the current state of the latest shitstorm (which I am trying to avoid, actually).

ETA: And yes, this post is from a me-centric place, because when I tried writing it any other perspective, I came across even to my own eyes as megapreachy and talking about things I haven't earned the right to and ICK ICK ICK. I feel mostly-OK about talking about myself here, so yeah, I did. I wish I could do better, but I feel like this is better than silence, because I can't be silent when something is Not OK By Me.)

The plot thickens... This post may be polemical.

I told you I was going to comment on a few differences between the English and the Portuguese punctuation rules, but the following rule is the same for both languages:

2. Use commas after introductory clauses, phrases, or words that come before the main clause.

cut for length )

Now, this is all and well. As I said, it works the same way in Portuguese. But!

Traditionally, formal written English requires writers to use a comma after introductory elements, that is, after clauses or phrases that are at the beginning of a sentence. However, the trend among contemporary writers — even well-educated, professional writers — is to punctuate more lightly, using fewer marks of punctuation. Readers too seem to prefer this contemporary style, feeling that the traditional punctuation practices create text that looks over-punctuated and "heavy."

It’s not that I didn’t notice the trend. I did. But this trend goes against my “instict” as a writer. We don't have a similar trend in Brazil. If the phrase has fewer than three words, I'm okay with omitting the comma. But with a longer phrase? It’s too... violent for me. You may think I’m exaggerating, but your native language is a part of you. Some authors whose first language is not English but who write in English decide to keep their "foreign accent", and some of them are successful.

Besides, I don’t write only for English speaking readers. I know that I have readers whose first language is Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and who knows which other languages!

There is more than one question involved here:

1) The contemporary writers are not following this specific Grammar rule. Is that a correct assumption? If it’s a correct assumption, is it a good or a bad thing? Some people may like it, other people may not.

2) An author whose first language is not English but who writes in English cannot become a native writer of English. Should s/he even try?

There is no simple, unique answer to these questions. For me, it’s a difficult decision. For now, I’m following the English Grammar rules, and not the contemporary trend. But this may change in the future.

I'm looking for a beta to go over my WTP Warning Ficlets (WriSoMiFu) I'd like to post them to Walking the Plank, but I would like someone to give them a once over before I send them in.

I would usually ask my standard beta, but they are at the moment one of the few active submission mod at WTP. So they wouldn't be able to approve my work if they were the beta.

Anyone interested? Must be comfortable with all the kinks (or most of them at least)

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Oh and a side note, Walking the Plank is looking for volunteers. If you would be interested in becoming a submission moderator please sign up on our forum

Also Walking the Plank is having a fund raising drive to help cover costs for the website and domain

Any money graciously donated will be used to help pay for web hosting and domain registration for the site. The balance will be kept on the paypal account and any remaining amount will be carried over to help pay for the next year of the site.

Title: Speak Low if You Speak of Love
Author: Can owls write? Hedwig always seemed rather shifty.
Giftee: [info]thesewarmstars
Word Count: ~21,500
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Harry/Severus
Warnings: *Not-Epilogue compliant, Alive!Severus, Top/Bottom!Snape, Virgin!Snape, Experienced!Harry, Top/Bottom!Harry, very minor blood-play*
Disclaimer: The world of HP and its characters belongs to Rowling. The author of this fic has borrowed them for the purposes of storytelling. No profit was or will be made.
Summary: When a secret is revealed during casual conversation, Harry sees Severus in a brand new light. Will he be able to convince Severus to take their friendship to a whole new level?
Author's Notes: Thanks to the brilliant whitecotton for all her spectacular beta work and Brit-picking. I seriously would not have finished this if not for her. Also, I would like to say thanks to atypicalsnowman for making certain I understood exactly what was desired in a fic. Last but not least, thanks to R, B and D for allowing me to pick their brains as I ironed out the plot. The title is a line from William Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing.’
